about zumba

On Tuesday night I went to my first ever Zumba class.

If you didn't know - Zumba is a latin-inspired dance/aerobics fitness craze.  I've never had the courage to drag myself to class a before, but on Tuesday I just decided that you only live once, and so what if you look a little stupid sometimes?  Not like it would be the first time for that.

So I found myself in a room full of women shaking our hips to reggaetone and spanish pop, trying to keep up with the instructor and wondering what on earth I was doing.

and it. was. AMAZING.

I didn't even think it was possible to have that much fun exercising, but apparently it is.  Even in a space full of mirrors that reminded me (more than once) that I personify every antonym for "sexy", I just didn't care.  No one else cared.  It was like "hey, I'm not sure how to roll my body like J-Lo, but here we go, just gonna try it!"

and try I did.  and laugh.  and successfully manage a few A-for-effort shimmy's. and realize what freedom there is in not taking yourself too seriously.

In the process of losing a calorie or two, I learned to lose myself - just to throw my body around and laugh and dance without care.  It was a pretty wonderful lesson gained.
